Who Shot Rock and Roll?

Today was all about braving the extreme freezing cold and venturing out to park slope brooklyn and over to the museum to check out the exhibit "Who Shot Rock and Roll".
http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/rock_and_roll/
As you may already know I fancy myself to be quite the photographer. Okay perhaps that is really only in my dreams and reality is another thing altogether. I do however love taking photos, and appreciate professional photographers who offer us the rare glimpse into intimate moments with artists and such. In the last few years i have grown more and more interested in becoming in tune with particular photographers unique styles and abilities. The following are my favorite shots from the exhibit which finishes its 3 month run at the Brooklyn Museum this coming sunday.

This MIck Rock photograph was taken of Syd Barrett soon after his departure from Pink Floyd in 1969. This particular shot was one that started my interest in individual style and collections. I first noticed this photo about four years ago while staying at the Roosevelt hotel in West Hollywood and it was located above my bed.

Barry Feinstein had exclusive access to Bob Dylan from 1966 until 1974. What resulted was a collection of black and white prints that allow us the viewer to feel as if we know this folk singer personally. This shot to me is somewhat sad in the sense that this man is trapped and isolated in his own success while the outside world is begging to come crash inside.

The particular story behind this series of four shots is quite fascinating and one that i was not aware of until today. Ed Caraeff was only 17 years old at the time he took these pictures. With little to no experience he somehow found himself with an ideal vantage point of Jimi Hendrix during his iconic performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Using a roll of film with 36 exposures the fourth shot in the sequence is exposure number 36A. Talk about having a little bit of lady luck on your side. THis photo has gone on to be forever in our minds as a symbol of the 60s musical movement and that of pop culture.

Having basically shot everyone who is anyone over the course of the last 30 plus years, Barrie Wentzell's work is deserving of an entire blog entry on its own. What can I say about this shot of Elton John other than wow! I f***in love it!

Jim Marshalls shot of Johnny Cash giving us the finger while performing for inmates at San Quentin Prison in 1969. This photograph is the man in black at his most charming and pissed off!

Very few photographers, no matter how exclusive their access is , would be allowed to capture this moment, and then to print it. Kurt Cobain minutes after coming off stage in Seattle. Having just smashed his guitar and amplifier he is so built up with emotion from the moment that he breaks down off stage and tears are shed. Ian Tilton had exclusive access to the band for several years during the height of Nirvana and grunge music. It is so fitting a portrayal of the angst and pent up emotion that Kurt was feeling and releasing all at the same time.

Lynn Goldsmith somehow captured this amazing moment during a Rolling Stones concert in 1978 in Anaheim California. Such a metaphorical picture if you choose to look at this way. After basically pouring his soul out on stage for an hour plus to the thousands of fans in attendance, they in turn give their souls (shoes) back to him.

What can i say....this photo speaks for itself. I love it!

Live from New York its....Saturday Night!!

Quite possibly the best day i have had in a long time. YOu ever have those days where you just wake up on the right side of the bed and everything falls into place from the get go. Well that was my day today! THis was despite not getting a whole lot of sleep as it was an early morning and i decided that drinks with a friend last night was a good idea. Anyways, 7am came quickly and we headed off to Rockefeller Center to load in and rehearse for our two song performance on this weekends Saturday Night Live. Now having done pretty much every major TV show at least twice over the course of the last five years, this particular show is an exclusive one that i have yet to be a part of. The band loads in and rehearses on Thursday, you have friday off, and then on saturday you show back up late in the afternoon, do a quick soundcheck, followed by a full dress rehearsal with a studio audience, and then of course the live show starting at 11:30EST with a new studio audience. Let me say that of all the crews i have worked with at the various shows todays group of people was amongst the best in the business.
Overall it was a really great day for Craigers that got off on the right foot and continued to get better with each passing hour. Please tune in on saturday night as i am positive it will be a memorable one and take comfort in knowing that I have the day off tomorrow....
till then...

Madonna Loves New York

I am a fan of the Madonna record "Confessions On A Dance Floor". That being said, while driving back into NYC this evening, I felt it appropriate to play the track "I Love New York" on my Ipod. The following are what i have decided are quite possibly amongst the all time worst song lyrics....Decide for yourself....

I don't like cities
But I like new york
Other places make me feel like a dork
Los Angeles is for people who sleep
Paris and London
Baby you can keep

[Chorus]
Other cities always make me mad
Other places always make me sad
No other city ever made me glad except New York
I love New York [X3]

If you don't like my attitude
Then you can F off
Just go to Texas
Isn't that where they golf

New York is not for little pussies who scream
If you can't stand the heat
Then get off my street [repeat]

[Chorus]

I love New York [repeat]
Get off my street [repeat]

Back on track

Okay Okay Okay...in recent posts I have shifted away from the very foundation of this blog, which was to document my travels through words, pictures, and music. I will admit that i really had no structure or firm basis to adhere to and always planned on writing what i felt like at any given time. It has however been brought to my attention that i may whinge(sp), bitch, or just plain ramble on far too much. I may have even lost a few followers due to this. So from this point on , although i cannot guarantee any firm structure, i do plan on being a little more photogenic with my postings...
stay tuned...

Playing in my headphones right this very moment!

Confidence and the fear of failure

Todays topic is the lack of confidence amongst my friends, and somewhat in myself. I mean i am a confident guy to a certain extent , but by no means am i over confident or egotistical. Its seems that more than a few of my friends keep holding back somewhat with regards to their careers or their lives just because they are afraid of failure. i say fuck the fear and go forward with your plans, goals, and potential achievements. Confidence is key but it is by no means the be all end all. Walk the walk, talk the talk, play the part, and pretend you know what you are doing. If you fall on your face, get back up quickly and get back at it! I know for myself the notion of fear or failure that resides in the back of my head at all times is what keeps me on my toes and progressing forward. Once you lose the fear i think its all downhill.
My advice today peeps and readers (although their is none) , is that you walk with your head held high, chin up, and know that you can do whatever you set out to achieve!
As cheesy as it sounds, it is true!

En français s'il vous plaît

Tonight has been my first night in online french lessons...
this is going to be harder than i thought..
standby..

In the South...

of France that is...
After exactly one month off since our last promotional tour ended in Rome last December, we are back out in France performing on the biggest awards show in the nation. Welcome to NRJ I say. Following this we will spend the majority of the upcoming week back in New York City where it all comes to a grand finale with two songs on Saturday Night LIve!
I realized the other day that i will not have a day off at home in Vancouver until the middle of April! This is because following this promo run, I head straight into my Olympic gig, which in turn runs straight into my first US tour with the maestro.
Trust me I am not complaining as its good to be focused at the moment...
till next time

Check-Check-Check it out folks...

Oh and serious congratulations to my good friends in Jets Overhead for landing a slot on the friday. If you have not heard of them or listened to either Bridges or No Nations, please find the time to and i assure you that you will fall in love with the lush harmonies, the atmospheric jams, and the return to real song writing in its purest form of honesty.

Side note... although they are not on this years line-up, this is currently my album of the day! Oh, and of course its turned up to 11 and as I pack I am for surely rocking out like its nobodies business...

I had the opportunity to pay my respects a few years ago in Fremantle Western Australia to Bon Scott. Thank you for leaving us with your legacy...another talented artist who is gone but not forgotten.

Professional Sports

In the world of Professional sports trades are a part of the game. You know going in that at somepoint you maybe traded to another team. It must be hard to be teammates with a group of people and then in an instant have to severe that companionship and build a new relationship with new teammates.
I know i would miss my teammate if i was traded for someone else.
It is however a part of the deal you sign when you first become part of a team.
Not always fair though i would say.

My First ever trip to NYC

Recently a good friend of mine, Jennifer, came across a series of pictures from a visit we both took to New York City back in 2005. This was the first time either of us had ever been there and it has remained a magical place in my heart ever since. I have been there several times since and each time is filled with its own set of memories. I have had the pleasure of being in the east village when the bars close down, only to reopen with the drapes closed, serving drinks till the last of the faithful have departed. Browsing or searching through thousands of CDs or Records in Greenwich till your eyes are blurry and you realize you have been there for seven hours! I fell in love with an amazing woman while in New York a few years ago and have extremely fond memories of feeling as if there was nothing i could not do if i tried! In turn i had my heart broken while in New York and was angry at the city for taking my dreams away. All of these moments are chalked up to what one could refer to as "New York Minutes". Anything can happen in the city if you believe it and want it bad enough. I am writing about New York because i am packing to head to France tonight followed by another trip to New York. This time we will be performing on the legendary Saturday Night Live. I am very lucky to have an opportunity to be a part of this historical show, even if its not as popular or cutting edge as it once was. I actually feel its currently in a good place right now and the writing is back to edgy and pushing boundaries. So back to my first ever trip to Manhattan and all its concrete splendor! The following are a series of pictures that are from that June in 2005, recently discovered and edited.
Enjoy

The Plot

Have you ever had one of those days where you really just lose the plot altogether. Blinders come into play and your focus is strictly directed in one narrow direction. Vision is somewhat construed and opinions are generated based on assumption. It can be tricky to gather the paperwork and plans to reorganize the plot but it is necessary.
So if you have ever had one of those days fear not as you are not alone. It is however up to you and only you to regain focus, control, and to get the plot back on track....
